Alicia and her co-conspirators stared at the viewscreen as the shuttle banked away from the asteroid and flew away.

“Battle damage report!” bellowed General Tribiazus. The thick veins on the Thlazian’s head throbbed with every heartbeat.

A sergeant behind a computer console replied, “It’s just coming in now, sir.”

“Well, what is it?”

“Captain Gordon reports that he suffered 37 KIA and 42 WIA.”

“That’s almost our entire contingent of guards,” noted Admiral Keel.

The sergeant continued. “Sir, Captain Gordon also said that the total could be larger, as he hasn’t heard from all of his section heads yet.”

“I know those numbers sound terrible, but their sacrifices will be worth it in the long run,” said Alicia.

“I damn well hope so,” said Tribiazus. “Because our base and what we’re doing here is no longer a secret.”

“We’ll have to relocate our operations before the Imperial Fleet is dispatched to deal with us,” said Keel.

“We have time,” said Alicia trying to calm her partners’ fears.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” said a technician. “But I think you may want to see this.”

Keel, Tribiazus, and Wendy stopped talking and stared, wide-eyed, as a long, slender ship decloaked barely one hundred kilometers from the asteroid.

“What the hell is that?” sputtered Tribiazus.

“It’s something that shouldn’t exist,” replied Keel.

A second later, silence fell over the command center as the enemy ship fired two missiles.

“Shields!” yelled Tribiazus.

“They’re at full power, sir,” the base defense officer replied.

Alicia let out her breath. They were safe. Or so she thought, as the missiles sliced through the shields and raced toward the asteroid. Alicia closed her eyes and began to pray for salvation.
